THE EDUCATIONAL PATH MURŠČAK
Welcome to the path of friendship with nature
This educational path is the first object of its kind in Međimurje that is adequately marked with suitable signs and a guide.
The path is 6.300 m long and it has 12 marked stations or stops: the Murščak, the Čiga and the Glavni leš, the Vrbulja and the bird's world Murščak, the Mura, the Stara straža ( The Old Guard), woods with humid habitats, the Bee-hive, the Meadow košanice, the Game of Murščak, the Pond Fučićka, the woods, of drier habitats and the Puddle.
You can cycle or walk along the path identifying the marked phenomenon as you go along. Our wish is to make every stop along the path a classroom in the open, in nature where you can, under real conditions, acquire a high level of' knowledge about water, wood, meadows, a plough-land biosystem.
The geography and the richness of the history, housbandary and traditional values of this ecologically preserved area. The path is located in a part of the Murščak which is the widest area along the Mura, it has no settlemens and it is spread out over to 1500 hectares.
Murščak has been known from the past as a large area of extremely old oak-tree wood after which Murščak was named. Until the great clearance down in 1927, Murščak had been largly covered by oak wood and this wood was mentioned in Međimurje in 1672 in the inventory of the propertics of the Hungarian chamber and by the successor Nikola Zrinski to the Međimurje estate.
Throughout history the manorial families changed and with them the scenery of
Murščak changed too. Because of the anthropogical influence and the amelioration of the river Mura course Murščak is today divided into a marshland along the river Mura which is overgrown by trees, within a protective dam and cultivable land along with the remains of the former woods and is also divided into changeable water habitats from the outer side of the protective dam.
Since spring 2001 the area along the Mura as well as the Murščak itself have gained protected scenery status which encourages us to be even more warried about and to care more for the unique values of this area. The Society for the protection of natural heritage "Mura" and the inhabitants of the district county of Domašinec wish you a pleasant and most of all an educational journey on this educational path known as the Murščak.
